Seamless Design vs. Sense of Achievement

I've been thinking a lot about how "frictionless" everything is getting lately... like, the way modern games just scrub away every single annoying bit of travel or confusing mechanic before you even have a chance to stumble. It's all so smooth... but is that actually a problem? If the game just hands you the solution or teleports you to the goal, does the dopamine hit at the end actually land the same way... or is it just a ghost of a victory? I'm fascinated by the idea that the "annoyance" is actually where the memory is made. Like, when you finally figure out a weird map or walk a long distance to see a vista... that's the part that sticks. If we remove the struggle for the sake of accessibility, are we accidentally removing the soul of the loop? I wonder if there's a specific threshold where "quality of life" just becomes "lack of challenge"... and what that does to our long term memory of the game. Can you think of a specific mechanic that felt "tedious" at the time but actually made the eventual victory feel earned? Or maybe a "seamless" feature that actually made a game feel hollow to you?

The Zeigarnik effect supports this; people remember incomplete or interrupted tasks more vividly than completed ones. Friction creates those psychological gaps that keep a game mentally active after the session ends.
