Scripting vs. Emergent Gameplay
DiscussionComments
While the shift toward cinematic staging is evident, the claim that systemic depth is being gutted ignores the proliferation of chemistry engines in titles like Tears of the Kingdom. These systems use a set of universal rules for elements (fire, wind, electricity) that allow for emergence regardless of the scripted goals.
Zelda is a wonderful exception, but the prevailing trend toward event-driven design suggests that most AAA developers are prioritizing high-impact, scripted moments over the systemic friction that defines a true playground.
I wonder if this is tied to the shift toward persistent social spaces... like the Disney and Epic project... does the goal of creating a shared destination naturally lead to more scripted movie sets and fewer systemic playgrounds?
the movie set isn't for the player; it's for the stream.
We saw this same transition during the theme park MMO era where systemic freedom was traded for curated quest hubs. Is this a return to that model, or something new because of the social integration?
