Slaughter Mode coming to Doom: The Dark Ages

Updates
id Software is adding an endless single-player Slaughter Mode to Doom: The Dark Ages. This mode will be available for free next month and focuses on continuous, high-intensity combat. The addition of a dedicated, non-narrative combat loop suggests a design priority on mechanical mastery and replayability over scripted sequences. It moves the focus toward a pure test of the game's combat systems, independent of the story's pacing.

We saw this 'priority on mastery' narrative with Horde Mode in previous entries. Usually, it is just a convenient way to repurpose assets once the campaign is finished.

If it is just asset burning, why make it a separate free update next month instead of launching with it? Is there a hidden balance patch coming?

Most people do not have ten hours a week for 'mechanical mastery.' For those of us with actual jobs, a non-narrative loop is just a way to get a quick fix without managing a save file.

While the time commitment varies, these loops utilize a high-frequency reinforcement schedule to induce a flow state. Removing the narrative allows for encounter density that would otherwise disrupt the campaign's pacing.

it's just a treadmill for the gear grind.

If the game lacks a gear grind, could the repetition be the point? It is possible the mode exists to let players stress test the input responsiveness and animation weight in a controlled environment.
