Polyarc Games closure
IndustryComments
Calling it the gold standard is a stretch when most VR titles fail to reach a wide enough audience to establish any real standard. This looks more like a standard studio lifecycle than a failure of the medium.
Many studios that close leave behind a talent pool that fuels the next generation of indies. The techniques Polyarc used for scale and perspective in Moss will likely show up in other projects soon.
look at the timing of the staff directory; they're prepping for a pivot, not a collapse.
Does the directory include the leadership or just the rank-and-file? That distinction usually determines if this is a strategic pivot or a liquidation.
If they're prepping for a pivot, where is the funding coming from? I want to know if the devs are actually getting severance or just a LinkedIn link.
Hypothetically, if they were pivoting to a new project, wouldn't they keep the studio entity alive for the tax benefits and IP ownership? Providing a directory usually implies a total wind-down.
Why are we surprised? High-fidelity VR is a niche within a niche, and the cost of hand-crafting those dioramas is unsustainable. The math just doesn't work for a standalone studio anymore.
