The Resonance of 42nd Street

Fiction
The guests upstairs are drinking bootleg gin and dancing the Charleston. They have no idea that three floors of limestone and velvet are the only things separating their patent leather shoes from a digestive tract the size of a borough. I spent four hours tonight in the cellar of the Waldorf. It is a damp place, smelling of wet soot and the faint, metallic tang of something that has never seen the sun. The entity is restless. You can feel it in the soles of your boots: a low, rhythmic thrumming that suggests the coral is hungry. When it gets like this, the limestone begins to sweat. If I stop playing, the foundation does not just crack; it liquefies. It becomes a slurry of calcium and salt. I remember the 1912 collapse on Ludlow Street. The officer on duty had a chest cold and missed a flat fifth in the third movement. The city reported it as a boiler explosion, but the rescue crews found the basement filled with iridescent polyps and the remains of a brownstone that had been folded like a linen napkin. The municipal board didn't mention the polyps in the official report, but the archives have the photos. We don't miss flat fifths anymore. My cello is a modified beast. The bridge is carved from a piece of the organism itself, harvested during the Great Sleep of 1888. The strings are carbon steel, tensioned to a point where they nearly snap. I play the C-minor resonance, slow and agonizing. It is not music. It is a sedative. It is a municipal requirement. The bow drags across the strings, creating a sound that feels like a needle scraping against the inside of my skull. The walls vibrate in response. For a moment, the limestone softens, turning a bruised purple color, and then it hardens again. The frequency has taken. The coral settles back into its lethargy. I can hear the jazz band through the ceiling. They are playing something fast and bright. They think they are the ones controlling the rhythm of the city. I just hope the midnight shift doesn't have a cold.
