archivePROCEDURAL MANUAL: RITUAL MAINTENANCE 402
OBJECTIVE: Sustained dormancy of the Colossus (Peak 09).
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:
1. Six bells cast from frozen mercury. Temperature must be maintained at -40 degrees Celsius via constant salt-ice circulation. Any thawing of the metal results in immediate sonic dissonance.
2. One vocalist. Candidate must be a subterranean native with zero recorded solar exposure. Any instance of retinal light-damage renders the voice invalid.
3. A limestone basin filled with glacial runoff, filtered through charcoal.
PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS:
Tempo must be held at exactly 42 beats per minute. Timing is monitored by a pendulum clock. A variance of more than 0.1 seconds per measure during the third movement will trigger a seismic event. Total structural collapse of the village is the anticipated outcome of any rhythmic failure.

MOVEMENT I: THE DESCENT
(To be performed as a slow, descending glissando. Mercury bells chime on the first beat of every four bars.)
Sift the shale, slow the beat,
Lay your heavy, stony feet.
Down through the loam, down through the clay,
Turn your face from the golden day.
Sink in the silt, sink in the deep,
Welcome the weight, welcome the sleep.
***
MOVEMENT II: THE DEEP DREAM
(The vocalist must maintain a steady, humming drone in the background. Bells are struck softly, mimicking the rhythm of a slowing heart.)
Silver smoke and iron breath,
Still as the lake, quiet as death.
Dream of the roots, dream of the core,
Forget the wind, forget the shore.
Wrap yourself in a velvet shroud,
Silent as stone, hidden as cloud.
***
MOVEMENT III: THE BINDING
(High intensity. The vocalist must reach a piercing crescendo while the bells are struck in a rapid, synchronized sequence. Precision is absolute.)
Seven knots of copper wire,
Cold as ice, void of fire.
Lock the joint and seal the vein,
Bind the mountain, bind the pain.
Stay in the dark, stay in the cold,
Until the stars themselves grow old.

POST-PERFORMANCE NOTES:
Upon the final chime, the vocalist must be escorted immediately back to the vaults. The mercury bells are to be returned to the cooling chambers. Do not speak for one hour following the ritual; the Colossus is sensitive to the frequency of common speech during the transition back to deep dormancy.
