script[FILM START]
[VISUAL: A brightly colored, simplistic animation of a suburban street. White picket fences, blue skies, and a smiling man in a sweater vest mowing his lawn. The title card reads: YOUR NEIGHBOR IS NOT YOUR NEIGHBOR. Produced by the Department of Civic Stability.]
NARRATOR (Cheerful, high-energy): Hello there, citizen! You love your neighborhood. You love the peace, the quiet, and the friendly faces of your fellow homeowners. But have you noticed something... off... about the fellow next door?
[VISUAL: The animated man stops mowing. He turns to the camera. His smile is slightly too wide, extending past the corners of his mouth. His eyes do not blink.]
NARRATOR: Meet Bill. Bill seems like a great guy. He keeps his hedges trimmed and always says hello. But Bill might not be Bill at all. He could be an Echo.
[VISUAL: A diagram appears. A human silhouette is shown next to an Echo silhouette. The Echo silhouette is identical, but its internal organs are replaced by a series of grey, interlocking gears and a void.]
NARRATOR: Echoes are entities that mimic the human form to integrate into our wonderful communities. While they look like us, they lack the subtle nuances of human consciousness. Fortunately, detecting an Echo is as easy as pie!
[VISUAL: Animation of a woman standing in a hallway. She holds a large hand mirror. She holds it up to a man's face. The man looks confused. He leans forward, trying to look *behind* the glass, oblivious to the reflection staring back at him.]
NARRATOR: First, try the Mirror Test. Echoes cannot perceive reflections. To an Echo, a mirror is simply a blank wall or a transparent pane. If your neighbor fails to acknowledge his own image, or appears baffled by the concept of a reflection, you have found an Echo!
[VISUAL: A clock on a wall. The second hand sweeps rapidly. We see a man and a woman chatting over a fence. The dialogue is represented by speech bubbles.]
NARRATOR: Next, listen for the Loop. Echoes struggle with long term linguistic coherence. While they can mimic a conversation, they operate on a strict seven minute cycle. Every seven minutes, an Echo will repeat a single sentence from earlier in the conversation, regardless of the current topic.
[VISUAL: The man says, "The weather is certainly turning." The clock hits the seven minute mark. The man suddenly stops mid-sentence while talking about his dog and says, "The weather is certainly turning," with the exact same inflection and tone.]
NARRATOR: See? How peculiar! If you hear a phrase repeated with mechanical precision, do not be alarmed. Just stay calm and maintain a polite distance.
[VISUAL: Animation of a woman stepping back into her house and locking the door with a heavy bolt. She picks up a rotary phone.]
NARRATOR: Now, what should you do? Do not attempt to confront the Echo. They can be quite confused when their mimicry fails, and a confused Echo is an unstable Echo. Instead, simply call the Department of Civic Stability.
[VISUAL: A friendly government agent in a grey suit arrives in a black sedan. He carries a briefcase. He shakes hands with the homeowner while a team of men in hazmat suits carry a bundled, twitching shape out of the neighbor's house.]
NARRATOR: Our specialists will arrive shortly to facilitate the removal process. Once the Echo is processed, your neighborhood will return to its usual, happy self!
[VISUAL: The original scene of the sunny street. The man mowing the lawn is gone. A new, smiling man is there instead. He waves.]
NARRATOR: Remember: A vigilant neighbor is a happy neighbor. Keep your eyes open, your mirrors ready, and your phone close. The Department of Civic Stability wishes you a wonderful autumn!
[VISUAL: Fade to black. A government seal appears with the text: COMPLIANCE IS COMMUNITY.]
