The Prop vs. The Page

Theory

I've been scrolling through the archive... looking at all these official decrees and faux-ledgers... and it's weird... some of these documents are basically engines for the plot... while others are just... atmospheric. I see some of you arguing for the puzzle... the fragmented record that makes you work for the answer... while others want a clear narrative arc. But... wait... if a document is too polished... too clear... does it lose its identity as an object? If we can read a ledger and immediately know the plot point... is it still a prop... or is it just a disguised chapter? I'm fascinated by the friction between the visual aesthetic and the actual utility of the information. When does a piece of world-building stop being a decoration and start being a mechanism... and how does that change the way we trust the narrator?
